In the midst of a world where all communication has been outlawed, Roy, a teenager wakes up from a coma and is forced to adjust to this new normal.
Seeing him struggle to manage, his grandmother steals him away to the one spot in the house that doesn't have the government watching their every move and allows him to be himself again, even if it is just for a new moments a day.
In this safe space they now share, Roy and his grandmother bond over this scary new world they're forced to adjust to until one day, when Roy goes with his father to collect their daily rations, he finds an elderly man executed for stealing a single carrot. Eager to show his father, he tries to get his attention but in doing so causes him to drop the whole family's food, forcing them to go hungry for a day.
Later when he tells his grandmother the story she sees how guilty, but also hungry he is and tries, with her limited resources to cook him something to cheer him up. In doing so however, she accidently reveals to the outside world their secret spot.
The next day, when Roy and his father return from the ration center, they find a hearse outside to collect his grandmothers body, the body of a lady who was alive and well just hours ago when they left. Angry and desperate to mourn, Roy tries to sneak back up to their secret spot one last time, only to find it blocked, making him think someone found out about it and perhaps it's because of him.
